Pain and Palliative Care

St Thomas Mar Thoma Church, Kozhencherry

The Pain and Palliative care unit was inaugurated on 24th August,2008 by His grace Dr. Philipose Mar Chrysostom Valiya Metropolitan was set up with an aim to extend a helping and soothing hand towards the severely ill and bed ridden patients in and around Kozhencherry.

Patients

140 patients had registered in the unit till 2012 September 30th. The present beneficiaries of the unit constitute a total strength of 80 patients comprising of cancer patients (19), Paralysis Patients (14), Kidney patients (11), patients with Psychiatric disorders (15), Heart patients (9) and 12 patients with other diseases.

Home Care

Nursing care at home is made available on every Friday for registered patients in need by Nurses from the National Rural Health Mission since 17th April 2009.

Rice Support

From 2009 September, food Kits are home delivered for the economically backward patients by the team leaders. In 2012 October, 22 patients availed the Rice Kit facility.

Medicine Support

From 2009 September, monthly supplies of required medicines are provided for the patients who cannot afford to buy them and in 2012 October, 60 patients benefitted from this facility.

Volunteers

Indian Association of Palliative Care (IAPC) provided the essential training required for volunteers. At present, thirty volunteers provide their services at the unit.

Monthly Meetings

Volunteer meetings under the leadership of  Rev. Thomas Mathew and Sri. V.S. George are held on a day every month at 3:30 pm in the church.

Treatment

The services of doctors are made available to the patients in our unit by the help and support of the District Palliative Care unit operating at Kozhencherry Government Hospital.
